Key Animal Welfare Issues
Pet Overpopulation
The root cause of most shelter overcrowding and euthanasia. Spay/neuter is the single most effective tool for reducing the number of unwanted animals born each year.
Shelter Overcrowding
When shelters take in more animals than they can place, healthy and treatable animals may be euthanized. Community spay/neuter programs directly reduce intake numbers.
Feral & Community Cats
Feral cat colonies are a significant source of cat overpopulation. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs humanely stabilize colonies and reduce their numbers over time.
Animal Cruelty & Neglect
Cruelty and neglect are serious problems that affect animals in every community. Reporting suspected abuse to local animal control is an important first step.
Puppy Mills & Backyard Breeding
Irresponsible breeding contributes to overpopulation and often produces animals with health and behavioral problems. Adopting from shelters and rescues is the best alternative.
Access to Veterinary Care
Many low-income pet owners cannot afford basic veterinary care, including spay/neuter surgery. Programs like PFA's help bridge this gap and keep pets in their homes.
